SAFETY WHILE USING THE INTERNET:

  - Resources for Parents & Teachers

The Internet is a great tool and a great resource for learning. However, it is also an unfiltered and uncensored resource. Unlike books, or even movies and television, no one has reviewed the content to determine if it is acceptable for young learners. Text messaging, instant messaging, blogs, and file sharing are all great tools in themselves. However, due to the anonymity of the Internet student may not know for sure who they are communicating with.

Parents and educators are always concerned with the safety of children, both at school and at home. The Internet may be fairly new to us but it is part of almost every child's daily life. We need to give children the skills they need to be able to use the wonderful resources of the Internet, but in a safe way.

We will be adding some resources on this page for parents and educators to use to learn about safety on the Internet themselves, and resources they can use to help teach children and young adults how to be safe and "Web Aware".

Fort La Bosse School Division has established policies and regulations that govern how students could safely use our resources while in the school environment. You can download these documents here:

Internet 101 Surfing Safety

http://www.internet101.ca/

"Here at Internet 101, our motto is “police and partners . . . working together to web-proof our communities”. Just as we teach our kids to safely navigate the streets of our cities, we need to do the same for the digital highway we call the Internet. A committee of police forces, led by the RCMP, created and maintains this website, a collection of safety tips, helpful presentations and links to further police-approved resources to help kids and parents surf safely (plus cool games!). Be sure to visit our website often as the content is updated and refreshed on a regular basis."

Cyber Tips

http://www.cybertip.ca/

" Cybertip.ca is Canada's National Tipline for reporting the online sexual exploitation of children. It is a centralized web portal for receiving and addressing reports from the public regarding child pornography, luring, child sex tourism, and children who are exploited through prostitution. Cybertip.ca also provides the public with information, referrals and other resources to help Canadians keep their children safe while on the Internet.”

The Media Awareness Network.

http://www.media-awareness.ca/english/parents/index.cfm

"MNet is a Canadian non-profit organization that has been pioneering the development of media literacy programs since its incorporation in 1996. Members of our team have backgrounds in education, journalism, mass communications, and cultural policy."

"MNet's work is based on the belief that to be functionally literate in the world today – to be able to "read" the messages that inform, entertain and sell to us daily – young people need critical thinking skills."
