Welcome back! We are having a look at the quilt that we are going to be sewing as a class this week. Students were to have their material brought in for their sewing project by Monday. We are making a quilt at the same time as sewing the PJ pants. Students will take turns hand sewing the quilt and machine sewing their pants until both projects are finished. We are going to raffle the quilt off once we have finished it.
Have a warm and safe Christmas Break!
December 14 - December 18, 2009

December 7- December 11, 2009
We will be having a test on Wednesday that will finish off our cooking unit. We have been learning some basic sewing techniques. We will be sewing buttons and learning to make straight, consistent stitches when sewing by hand. Students are going to have the chance to take part in hand-sewing a quilt as a class. We will start the quilt this week but won't be finishing it until after Christmas Break when we are also doing some sewing with the sewing machines.
November 30 - December 4, 2009
We have started our sewing unit this week. We will be starting with the basics this week. We will be treading a needle, knotting the thread and looking at different types of stitches. Students are off to a good start. We are hoping to get some actual sewing done before Christmas break, which is coming up very quickly.

This is our final week of cooking. We will be starting to work on materials, stitching, and sewing next week. We are going to be baking cakes on Tuesday. Students were given four options to pick from. The recipes are below.
On Wednesday we will be making casseroles during our morning class. They will bake after class and then we will be eating the casseroles during lunch hour. Again, students were given several options for their casseroles.
November 10-13, 2009
We only have 3 days of classes this week so we have a lot of work to get done. Students will be writing a test on Thursday afternoon. We are going to be making pizzas this week. Students will have the choice of their toppings on their pizzas but two groups will be cooking their pizzas on the BBQ and the other two groups will be cooking in the oven. It will be interesting to see if there is much of a difference between the different cooking methods.
November 2-6, 2009

We have spent some time in our kitchen this month learning about different tools and methods that are used in the kitchen. We have also spent some time talking about Safety in the kitchen and possible contamination issues that could affect ones cooking.
Before BBQing chicken, steak, lamb and a vegetable/potato mix we spent some time learning about BBQ safety and the importance of being careful around a BBQ.
Students spent one class preparing and marinading their meat and vegetables and then we had a wonderful BBQ the following day. We have a beautiful hot day for it and everything turned out wonderfully.
We also made some yummy cookies that a lot of the students and staff were able to test. Everyone was very impressed!!
Students have had the opportunity to make Crabapple Jelly and Plum Jam. Students learned about extracting juice from the fruit and then how to prepare it for making jam or jelly. Most of the jam and jelly set but we had to re-boil and add more certo to one of the batches. It's all a learning process. Now they know what went wrong and how to fix a mistake.
Thank you to a community member for donating the plums.
