Constitution: objective of PAC is to enhance cooperation & communication and to promote interaction between parents, community, students, school staff, administration and School Board and other advisory councils.
The current Executive consists of 5 people Lisa Jones (chair RCI) Laurie Martin (chair RES), Candy Wanless (secretary), Laurie Campion (Treasurer RES), and Wilma Boulton (Treasurer RCI). The principal and 1 teacher are not allowed to vote in the Executive and therefore not counted as an executive position.
According to the constitution the executive shall consist of not fewer than 7 or more than 15. Not fewer than 2/3 shall be parents of children attending school and who are not employees of the division. And not more then 1/3 of the executive may be non-parents and must live in the catchment area.
The executive may act during any vacancy & not be invalid. If there are less than 5, they may act only to increase the number. HALF OF THE EXECUTIVE SHALL CONSTITUE A QUOROM.
DISSOLUTION – pay all debts – disburse remaining funds- records of PAC are placed under the jurisdiction of the Division by the Principal.

After a discussion it was decided that we will not meet again until spring but will not dissolve at this time to give others the opportunity to come forward to keep PAC going.
Current executive will remain in place for the time being. It will be communicated to the parents of our student body that new people are needed if PAC is to continue –interested parties please contact Laurie Martin, Laurie Campion, or Candy Wanless.

RES/RCI PAC MEETING MAY 15, 2008 @7:30 @RCI

A Reston Elementary/ Reston Collegiate Parent Advisory Council meeting was held May15, 2008 @ RCI. Present were Richard Lochhead, David Gillingham, Lisa Jones, Lori Greig, Lisa Irwin, Laurie Campion, Wilma Boulton and Lorna Milliken.                     

Treasurers' reports were given as: RCI with $145.19 and RES with $2537.82.                           

The Reston Collegiate report named various events that have been held in the last two months; such as the Conservation, Royal Purple and Rough Riders Presentations for Gr.7 – 12. Gr.8's attended a Wellness Day in Virden. A presentation of Safe Workers of Tomorrow was held for Gr.9 – 12. The students were introduced to a new course titled “Land and Water Management” which is now available on-line form Virden Collegiate. Music Monday was enjoyed at noon outdoors by many.

                  

Other extra-curricular activities include: Reach for the Top (Jr. & Sr.), Book Club, badminton (RCI team placing very well), track & field, baseball/ fastball, executive games (placed 2 nd in province), & the Yearbook Committee.

Course selection and staffing are being discussed, trying to maintain all courses and juggling teachers and time slots. Student council elections will be held soon.                       

Upcoming events include: Zone Track & Field –May 20 (Brandon), School Prom Dance – May23, Jr. Track & Field – May28 (Elkhorn), Provincial Track & Field – June 6 & 7 (Winnipeg), Provincial Ball – June 5-7 (Reston), Provincial Pre-Calculus Exam – June 9, Band Concert – June 4, Exams – June 16-26, Grad – June 25, and Awards/ Report Card Pick-up – June 27.

In the Reston Elementary's report, Professional Development Days were attended. Topics were walk-through training for administrators, nutrition in the canteen (noting now hotdogs may be served only 2x/monthly), new assessment for Gr.5 & 6 removing the percentage marking. Bus dismissal routines have changed slightly to be more efficient.  Enrolment is down slightly for next year, resulting in a small cut in teacher time. Class organization and teacher time are being discussed for the 2008 –09 timetable. Gr.6 will likely stay in one room, as they are a large class, but multi-grade classrooms will otherwise be continued. The students have been busy with badminton and track & field, with May 22 as Elimination Day. Gr. 6's attended a Farm Safety Day. Tabloid Day is June 13 and Awards Day is June 26.                                       

RES has donated their Tundra donation of $3000 (from last year for new goal posts) to the Reston School Playground Project.               

RES requested assistance from the PAC for: the purchase of a new math curriculum; asking for $1000 of the $5000 total cost the purchase of two cement benches (they will be movable) to replace the wooden ones in front of the school for $300 total the purchase of a bulk memory stick order for Gr.2 and up; asking for $250 (already have $600)             

Parent Advisory Council approved this request and will give $1550.00 to Reston Elementary for these purchases. Laurie Martin has offered to co-ordinate lunch for Tabloid Day.                       

There are no chairpersons' reports at this time.

Lisa Irwin reported that the school amalgamation project is still underway, with meetings to create working drawings in progress.  Next fall, Sept.23, a highly recommended motivational speaker, Corbin Kronenberg, will be in Virden. He specializes in motivating kids to be more responsible. All parents are invited to attend this presentation. Advertising will be done when the date is closer.

Curling (Gr 5 & 6) has culminated with a bonspiel.

Basketball (Gr 5 & 6) has finished

Intramural badminton (Gr 4,5,6) has begun during the lunch recess.

100 day party fro Gr 1,2,3 was held Feb 20th

D.A.R.E (Gr 6 student with parental consent) has begun and will continue until approximately the end of April. Constable Giesbrecht will be holding a parent information night at a later date.

Student Council has been holding meeting to prepare for Spirit Week which will be held the last week of March - before Spring Break.

Received a request from Virden PAC to help fund a parent evening with speaker Colin Cronnenberg Sept 23 in Virden. Discussion resulted in a motion from Laurie Campion that we agree to provide up to $150.00 toward the cost- seconded by Wilma Boulton. - Carried.

Fundraising info received and passed on to new playground committee.

New Business;

A new playground committee is being formed. Thank you to those who have offered to help. More people are required so please mark your calendar for the next meeting April 8 @ RES.

Fort La Bosse wondering if there would be interest from PAC to view presentations form MAPC. - Some interest was generated.

Sports - soccer, volleyball. Some changes for this year tournaments will have Gr 5 & 6 v s. Gr 5 & 6. RES will host tourney Nov 20.

Some interest in trying basketball this year - looking for someone to teach skills

Received a letter from superintendent regarding Halloween behavior.

Received letter from the Rainbow Society about a fundraiser in which students would wear green, donate a dollar to the charity which grants dreams for terminally ill children.

David will forward to the Student Council.

Laurie Martin informed the committee that she is not able to do the Hot Meal Program this year. Letter will go out requesting that someone take over (maybe a group volunteers to run the program rather than one person's responsibility)

Thanks to Laurie for all the work she has done in the past.

Short discussion regarding the naming of the new school. Possibly a contest for student to come up with a name.

RES School fees about 95% paid - it was brought up that we should put a notice in the paper so the community is aware that there will not be a fundraiser this year.

Gr 6 Cheese Sale will begin in Nov. - back by Christmas Break

Questions about changing the combinations on the lockers at the High School. At this time last years combinations still work. Richard will look into the options.

Dakota Language will be starting this fall Gr 9-12 for Credit, but will be offered to Gr 1-8 as well. Will be taught by Noella Eagle. Program is 100% funded by Canupawakpa Dakota Nation.

School fees will be introduced in September that will replace the current fundraiser.

Proposed fees are as follows: Kindergarten $10.00/ student

Grades 1-3 $15.00/ student

Grades 4-6 $20.00/ student

Sports fee $5.00/ player/sport to be paid at the start of each activity

RES will see the loss of 1.159 FTE for 07/08. This will probably be .9 FTE teacher with the balance coming from support staff. Admin assistant will be cut to .5

David thanked PAC for goodies during Staff Appreciation Week.

 

Enrolment is at 92 ½ right now. 9 Kindergarten registered for next fall – projected 87 next year.

 

Professional Development – multi-level literacy, Sharon Brown literacy circle, math divisional day, technology ITC

 

Christmas Concert had good response and brought in $5600. From silver collection.

 

Curling has come and gone with intramurals and a bonspiel. Thank you to all staff and parent volunteers.

 

Report Card /Interviews – low turn out – very quiet day, reports remain the same.

 

Grade 3 held a popcorn and stuffed animal sale and raised $153.00 for Red Cross.

 

Spirit week is planned for next week, many of the same activities with more dress up days.

 

I Love to Read Month was in February – fun activities, guest readers Sally Bender and Jacelyn, successfully encouraged more reading through out the grade levels.

 

School Pictures – all of Fort la Bosse is trying a new company next fall – looks to be better quality with better prices

 

Tundra donated $6000.00 to RES- looking a buying heart rate monitors, smart boards and projectors and soccer goal posts

 

Bike Helmet Promotion – government is partnering to buy low cost helmets. Info coming out middle of March.

 

RHA Health Survey – Gr 6 – 12 classes did a survey to find out what is going on in their lives, activities ect. A breakdown of results will come out without personal names etc.

 

Counseling services – Tess Lalonde resigned as of Spring Break and Wendy B. Anchester is taking over.

 

Brought up what would parent response be if a memory stick or flash drive was added to 4,5, & 6 school supply list – running at a cost of about $30.00. Once the student had purchased one they could use the same one for all grades. The school is finding that with all the assignments done on the computer they can't back anything up and the drives are filling up too fast. Could be good idea – look into place to store them so they don't get lost and wondered about taking them home to work on homework, virus concern though.

Black Book – no one has been opposed although they could have been of better use if a day planner instead of address book – will order them for students.

 

Oak Hammock Marsh – gr. 7-10 Very good presentations for all grades for science programs.

 

RCMP Recruitment / Wahpeton and Bottineau Presentation and Recruitment / Red River, ACC and BU presentations

 

Jeremy O'Day – Reston Fine Foods and Reading Challenge – Rough Rider Tickets still available.

 

Grade 9 Needles – missing many permission forms and the forms must be in to get the needles. Understood that if the needles are not received students may not be able to attend school.

 

Facilities Tours of School Building

 

RCMP Drug Presentation – Crystal Meth – Huge concern and is a big push by provincial government for the presentations and information

 

Provincial ELA Exams are done Math is in Spring.

Band Fundraising – Fruit sale cancelled due to frost, sold Mom's Pantry instead and raised $1900.00 more than fruit sales in past. Sask. trip – leave March 15 th, for Moose Jaw and Regina. Tundra donated $6000.00 to Band.

 

Windows should be replaced during Spring Break.

 

3 additional cameras were to be installed – still waiting.

 

Extra Curricular – high school hockey, curling, badminton, basketball, executive games, reach for the top junior and senior teams.

 

Christmas Banquet went over well.

 

School Ski trip was held on March 7 th and had a great day with no injuries.

 

Harlem Crowns – sponsored by Canupawakpa , very talented Basketball Players and each spoke and had a different message to share.

New Business

 

Government told the school boards that they could only have a 4%
surplus, which is lower than what the auditors suggest.
-Boards only had a very short time to comply with the directive (Friday
- Wednesday)
-If the board has a surplus greater than 4% then they must reduce taxes.
-Our Board added to their budget from surplus and reduced the amount of
school tax increase they were asking for.
-Board has enhanced some areas such as: Noon hour Supervisor Wages,
Extra Curricular Transportation, LICT, Professional Development of
Staff, Replacement Cycle for Computers

Westman Youth Choir performed Oct 16. RES students attended as did some community members. Performance was very well received. A couple of students may try out for it next year.

Grade 9 Wellness Day - Scheduled for Nov 9 had to be rescheduled for March.

Remembrance Day Service went very well. Grade 12 ELA, Mr. Schiltroth and Mrs. Gillingham organized. RES participated. A nice addition this year was the Junior Drummers from Pipestone. Thanks to all who took part.

Extra Curricular: Volley Ball winding up. Boys team going to Provincials in Dominion City.

Hockey underway and going well.

After School Curling to begin Dec 6 th . Some student will be preparing for Zone Play.

Reach for the Top will start Nov 30 with students traveling to Brandon.

Executive Games will again be lead by Dave Adams.

Presentations were given by both Minot State University and Assiniboine Community College. A lot of emphasis on getting kids to go into trades.

R.C.I. Band Concert to be held December 5 @ 7:30. Senior Band to go to Pipestone December 6 to perform at the Senior's Supper.

Fundraising - Magazine sales close to $7000.00 up from last year.

Chocolate sales going well.

Parent Teacher Interviews experienced very low turn out this year. (Both Thursday evening and Friday)

Sandra collecting items for Christmas Cheer in the Library. Names of those who donate will go into a draw.

Drug Sniffing Dogs were brought into RCI, as well as Elkhorn and VCI. The cost of $1400 for the three schools was covered by the division. RCI would like to do this again during the day and have the school in lock down. Staff felt this would have more impact on the kids. Neighboring divisions would possibly split the costs if done again.

R.E.S. Principal's Report

Pizza Party was very successful as a reward for Terry Fox Fundraising.

Enrollment has dropped to 97. Lost 4 students - Gained 2

Discussion regarding new report cards. All feedback was positive.

Ad-Hoc Committee will meet @ RES Nov 30

Healthy Foods Initiative- RES is following the provincial guidelines. Canteen is no longer offering chip and bars. Selling fruit to go, cheese strings, cheese and crackers, yogurt tubes, and yop. Kids are responding well. Has not affected the hot meal program but may have to change the number of times hot dogs are offered each month. A lot of the provincial recommendations are too time consuming to be possible for the canteen.

Volley Ball - very successful season

Thank you to Laurie Martin and Lisa Vanbeselare for helping to coach.

5& 6 tournament was held Nov 22 with the RES boys team winning. Great competition at this level. Hoping to do it again next year.

Nov 13-17 was Anti-Bullying Week. RES held an assembly on the 16 th with discussion about bullying behaviors, an anti bullying pledge, and bracelets handed out to the kids.

Thanks to RCI for hosting the Remembrance Day service. The kids really enjoyed the movie.

Vision / Hearing Screening have been completed with letters sent home with any children who may need further testing.

•  Thanked L. Irwin and K. Vinck for all their time as members as PAC and wished them luck in their new venture and thanked J. Skelton and B. Cook for their years as trustees

•  Artist in the School – Judy Cook came out of Winnipeg and instructed a dance week and the whole school had a sharing day on Friday

•  Terry Fox Run – raised $4168.00 The students will get their pizza party on Oct 17 th with L. Irwin and L. Martin helping to serve

•  Fun Fair – student council did a great job of organizing our popcorn table

•  Open House – was held Oct 4 th with good attendance. Potluck dessert went over well and Book Fair made $1500.00 with about 1/3 coming back to the school.

•  PD – Sept 27 th Colin Cronenberg spoke on Teaching kids Responsibility and by all reports was excellent

•  Oct 17 th – Faye Brown coming to the school to do literature circle with grade 4's

•  Oct 27 th – divisional Technology Inservice

•  Halloween Costume Parade – Oct 31 st 1:00

•  Collecting items for Operation Christmas Child Now – is an optional program

•  Report Cards – saw a preview of proposed report for grades 1-4. A few suggestions were made for changes

-Course Selection – students in grade 8-11 will be selecting courses for next year early in June, as soon as staffing is set for next year. Parents should sign off on course selection sheets. Students are encouraged to take as many courses as possible so that as many options as possible are left open to them after Graduation.

-Youth Job Centre – signed up students for work lists – had maybe 5 students sign up

-   Thanked the P.A.C. for Staff Appreciation Goodies

-   Healthy Schools- S.Simms and the Grade 5 class doing some research into healthy alternatives for canteen. Murray Anderson has a list and is looking into prices.

-   enrollment steady at 111, projected at 99 for next year

-   School Climate Survey – Will go out April 3rd and parents will be asked to fill out a form for each child in the school

-   Spirit Week has been planned by the student council

-   Badminton is underway

-   curling has finished up – thankyou to the volunteers

-   helmets have been purchased by the division for skating

-   report cards – division is looking into Division Wide Reports from K-4

-   P.D. Days – Feb 6 – Gladstone to look into Literacy issues and incorporate different ideas such as literacy lab/book room where all reading level books will be housed instead of in each individual classroom

-   Technology LIT – K-8 technology

IBM computers in lab will be replaced because of their age, unable to go online

new computers will be places around outside of classroom with screens facing in so that one supervisor can see all screens all the time – internet safety issue

•  thanked everyone for staff appreciation goodies

•  have purchased 2 wireless tablets – teachers can write on them with the information being projected up onto a wall/screen

•  new server will be installed with the capability of our tech. support people monitoring and troubleshooting all activity

•  by next fall hoping that the Maplewood student admin software will be on the world wide web and can be accessed at home. parents will be able to log in and check attendance, time tables, marks, transcripts, info on assignments

•  will be capable of allowing students to register for courses in the coming years

•  GROWING VERY FAST

•  Mr. Schiltroth is student teaching at R.C.I. right now – 7 weeks

•  closed circuit hallway cameras should be installed during spring break

•  parking signs are up

•  school ski trip was very well attended

•  High School Hockey – letters have went out to confirm interest for next year, may have to take a leave for a year because of lack of players

•  badminton – 5 players at Manitoba Games , divisional tourneys start next week

•  curling – after school finished, both girls and boys attended zones in Killarney, both April and Branden Jorgenson are at Manitoba Games

•  Reach for the Top – have been to Dauphin and there will be a competition at R.C.I. on March 21

•  Executive games – all teams did very well – 3 first place teams and 4 teams finished second,  only one team will advance to MB Grand Challenge held at Brandon University during the Rural Forum in Brandon at the end of April

•  Manitoba Safe Schools Forum – two gr 7 students go to Brandon

•  Youth Rural Forum – two gr 11 students will be chosen for a Town Hall meeting with Cabinet Ministers

•  2006 Travel Club did very well and are very excited to be heading to Europe (Vienna, London & Paris) on March 22nd

•  2007 Travel Club plans to run the canteen after Spring Break

•  Off School Site Permission forms – all schools must use them

•  Grad meetings have started (21 possible grads)

•  Grad Pictures were taken last week

•  Spring Break begins March 27th , classes resume April 3rd

•  Parent/Teacher interviews will be April 19th from 7:00 p.m– 9:00 p.m.

•  R.C.I. Dress Code Policy – had meeting and brought back proposed policy

•  looked at R.C.I., V.C.I. and Elkhorn, took out measurements

•  discussed that the word student should be removed as it should pertain to anyone in the school as does code of conduct and other policies.

•  brought up – why don't our kids go to the Career Symposium in Brandon; reasons given:  cost, kids taking off from the symposium site, and the kids that really want to go their respective parents can take them

•  like to be able to get more information as some parents drove in and it closed early and the phone numbers given were of no use

-Provincial Senior 4 ELA Exam has been written, K. Moore explained basic outline, and they will be corrected in Virden by teachers next week

- anticipating 3 more students for second semester

- Christmas banquet , catered by travel club who did a very good job, students were very well behaved this year

- ski trip is planned for Feb. 8 th , more info on the website

- badminton practices have started

- administration day – Monday, February 6 th

- R.C.I. Band Fruit Sale – will be starting soon

- Off School Site Policy – had to be done by December, means more paperwork and rules, in future a Blanket letter will be sent out at beginning of year to cover going off school grounds to remembrance day service ect for the year

- drivers now need license registration and have forms to sign

- Local exams Senior 1-4 February 1-3, regular classes for 7 & 8

- curling clinic – instructor is being organized by Marci Quaine for end of January with intramural curling beginning after that

- floor hockey intramurals have begun with S. Simms organizing

- skating – all classes are skating with helmet mandatory

- concert feedback – all reports were very good other than wanted children introduced teachers reported very hectic week but saved on 2 – 3 weeks practice time which mean more class time

- Oak Hammock Marsh will give presentation on Jan 25 th

- Speech interviews to be held on Jan 31 st

- Grade 3 Popcorn sale will be held tomorrow(Jan 19) with proceeds going to Red Cross

- school climate survey – Bill 30 Safe School Charter – had a meeting yesterday and made a survey which will be sent out to parents for their opinions on safety of the school
