Fall,
2009
Welcome
to the 09/10 school year. It is already the end of September, even though
we are just getting our summer weather. Everyone has quickly returned
to their normal routine here at RCI. There were not many changes to our
building over the summer, as the Division concentrated on up-grades to
the Division Office. We have a new computer lab of 10 desk tops and 9
lap tops for student use. The amalgamation project between RCI and RES
continues to move forward with more news anticipated in the near future.
The
H1N1 flu is bringing about many changes at all schools. There will be
many handouts to students and parents regarding preventative measures
to be taken, and many safety measures being implemented at the school
level. We will be installing numerous hand wash stations in the building
and stressing that everyone cough into their elbow area. The school must
report when there is more than 10% of the student population sick, so
there will be phone calls home if students are not in class. Please phone
the school office if your son/daughter is going to be away from school,
or is ill.
We
welcome a few “new” students to our school: Joline Hooper is in Grade
11, Paulo Reyes is in Grade 9, John Reyes is in Grade 7 and Jael and Rachel
Stanley have returned from Calgary, as well as the new Grade 7 students.
Many
of the extra curricular activities are up and running. Zone 9 Golf was
held in Melita, both Varsity Girls and Boys teams have started league
and tournament play in Volleyball as have the J.V. Boys Volleyball team.
The Grade 7 & 8 Boys and Girls teams have started practices. Staff
and students have organized a Book Club and are now reading their first
book. The Yearbook Committee have handed out the 08/09 Yearbook and have
started on this year's book.
A
reminder that we have many rules and guidelines that we must follow for
transporting students, so please come to the office and fill out all the
forms if you will be transporting students during this school year. There
are many activities that happen on an ongoing basis that require students
to leave the RCI school grounds that are considered low risk and are supervised
by staff that we will not be sending home permission forms for. These
would include activities like: Physical Education classes using community
facilities, activities at RES and playgrounds, Terry Fox Run, Music Mondays,
Picture Days, class walking assignments, Outdoor Ed. Activities, Student
Teaching, Physical Ed. Work Hour Program, Community Service activities,
etc. If you do not wish for your son/daughter to participate in these
types of activities, please contact the RCI Office.
There
are a number of school divisions in Manitoba that are working together
to bring in exchange students. We are looking for host families for next
fall. Families will be paid for room and board. If you are interested,
please contact the school for more information.
The
Student/Parent portion of Maplewood is running, if you would like your
password, please contact the school.
The
student pictures have been taken and returned to the school. Anyone wishing
to order pictures is asked to return them to the school by Tuesday, October
15.
The
Student Council has started their main fundraiser of selling magazines.
Anyone wanting a magazine, may order from any RCI student. Chocolate sales
will begin on November 3. On Friday, September 25, the RCI Staff &
Students participated in the annual Terry Fox Run & barbeque. All
proceeds ($275) will go to the Cancer Society.
Our
Grade 8 students will be participating in an “Unmasking Mental Illness”
presentation in Virden on Thursday, October 15. There will be a number
of different speakers and a show from “Big Daddy Tazz.” The Assiniboine
Regional Health Authority is sponsoring “Big Daddy Tazz” An Evening of
Comedy for everyone on October 5, supper at 6:00, entertainment at 7:30,
tickets are $20.
The
RCI students will again be helping at the Reston Fun Fair. A number of
the students are helping at the many activities and games, as well, each
family is asked to bring one batch of Fudge or candy to RCI Friday morning
(October 2). The Student Council will then package it up for sale at the
Fun Fair with the proceeds going to the Reston Rec Plex.
Reston
School Ski Trip will be held on Wednesday, March 3. Any parents that would
like to participate should contact Mr. Adams.
The
RCI/RES Remembrance Day Service will again be hosted by the Grade 12 English
class. The Service will take place on Tuesday, November 10 at 2:30. Everyone
